Pollyanna's statue, arms outspread in joy and welcome, stands on the library lawn. Her creator was Littleton's own Eleanor H. Littleton's got a celebrity, too: kid-lit heroine Pollyanna, that early 20th-century orphan who always kept her sunny disposition.

On Main Street, there are shops, restaurants and a movie theater. Ten miles from Whitefield, we stopped in Littleton, the site of a gristmill built in 1798 that is still grinding grain and producing flour. We headed back from Mount Washington on the east-west Kancamagus Highway, a 34-mile stretch through countryside so beautiful that turnoffs to viewing areas appear every few miles. Wimps like my husband and me can go up and down by tourist van, with an experienced driver-guide at the wheel. Hardy souls can climb it railroad fans can take the Cog Railway straight up the western slope motorists can drive up the eight miles of hairpin turns on the east. And the area includes waterfalls, a gorge, a swimmable lake and hiking and biking trails.Īnother day we headed east, to Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet the tallest mountain in the Northeast.

The Old Man viewing area remains an extraordinarily lovely spot, with the now unadorned cliff rising 1,200 feet above the calm expanse of Profile Lake. There were plenty of visitors the day we were there, however, and with good reason. The rock-ledge profile known as the Old Man of the Mountain - the Great Stone Face - had fallen off the side of Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch State Park the previous spring. One of the major attractions had actually disappeared by then. Besides, Dona set out cold lemonade and cookies hot from the oven every afternoon.Įvenings we went to the Weathervane. Mountain breezes cooled us at night, time didn't much matter, and it was so much nicer to sit in a rocking chair on the porch than to worry about world events. After a couple of days, we stopped caring what was going on in the world.

We wore our watches to bed, slept with our windows open and got into the car to hear what was going on in the world.

We were at first dismayed to find the room had no air conditioning or TV. Our room was charming, with gingham sheets and flowered comforter and white-painted desk and dresser. On our last morning there, when we were leaving too early to sit down for breakfast, Walt and Dona brought us food for the drive. Breakfast is included, from a menu that features light fare like fruit and yogurt and heartier stuff like pancakes, ham and sausage. The three youngest, ages 12, 10 and 8, were "cruise directors" for the children of guests, according to their dad.ĭinner is available in the air-conditioned dining room, from a menu comparable to that of a regular restaurant. Her next younger brother, 16, took care of the grounds. While we were there, the oldest of the five children, a 19-year-old daughter, was running the housekeeping service. Open only during the temperate months, the inn is a work in progress improvements and updates are on the Loopes' agenda. However, much like my own grandmother, if some bleary-eyed red nose shows up, she has been known to fire up the griddle for one more act of grace."We weren't here but two weeks before Dona said she was born to live in New Hampshire," Walt says. Now mind you, Doña Tere is no all-night party girl, so if things are looking thin she starts shutting down ’round midnight. While on the subject of price-gouging, if you are also a slave to post-binge hot dogs enrobed in bacon, remember they sell for $2.50 here, next time you are getting hustled for $4.00 outside the bar by the guy with the tongs and his intoxicating wares. No treachery intended towards El Farolito, but that might make you take a dim view of those stale chips they shovel out for a 50¢ premium. The beauty part is that the tacos, tamales, pupusas et al come in at five dollars or (mostly) less despite being hand-made to order.

If the neighbourhood has a grandmother, Doña Tere is she. When the sun dips below Twin Peaks, however, she consolidates her operation and waits with much needed sustenance for late commuters and stumblebums alike. For those in the hood, most of you would know her for her elote stand and it’s loyal post-school day following outside the Mission Boys & Girls Club.
